How to catalog a vinyl collection

samla.ai ·

Start with a crate you enjoy looking through. Photograph each record, check the pressing and condition, then save where it lives. You might find a forgotten favourite before you finish the first row.

Photograph the details you will want later

  • Sleeve, labels and runout markings
  • Artist, title, label, catalogue number and confirmed pressing
  • Record and sleeve grades, plus any playback notes
  • Inserts, posters, inner sleeves and the shelf or crate

Review, then save

A light wooden bookshelf of vinyl records with a turntable and houseplants in a bright apartment.

Add clear photos in samla.ai and review the suggested identification. Correct anything uncertain and add the details you know. Some information comes from labels or close-ups; some comes from living with the item. Save the room, shelf or box where you keep it.

Work through a manageable group, then stop when you feel done. You can return to research an uncertain detail later. A useful first pass gives you photos, a name and a place; it need not answer every question.

Keep it useful as the collection changes

Keep a consistent name for each shelf or crate. At a record fair, a quick search can settle whether you already own the album before you buy another copy.

Do I need to finish the whole collection at once?

No. Start with one shelf or box, save useful details and continue when you have time.
