Keep the papers with the watch and the story with the ring

The reference number hides on the caseback, the papers live in another drawer and the ring from your grandmother has tiny stamps nobody has read. Photograph each piece, check the details and note where the box and papers are kept.

The details you will be glad you kept

Read the small engravings

Photograph the dial, caseback and clasp, or the stamps inside a ring. Check the suggested brand, reference number and metal against the piece, and keep a worn stamp in your notes as uncertain until you can confirm it.

Keep the full set together

Note whether the box, papers, certificates and service receipts are still there, and where they are kept. Watch collectors often ask about box and papers, so it helps to know where they are.
