Know what hangs on your walls, down to the edition number

The lithograph in the hall is signed in pencil and numbered 23/100, and the oil painting above the sofa came from an art club draw years ago. Photograph each work, its signature and the back of the frame, and keep artist, technique and edition on one record.

Your notes

Hallway, above the bench. Gallery receipt photographed with the label on the back.

The details you will be glad you kept

Tell an original print from a poster

Photograph the signature, the edition number and any blind stamp in the margin. Check the suggested artist, technique and edition against the work itself, and keep a signature that is hard to read in your notes as uncertain until you can confirm it.

Turn the frame around

Gallery labels, art club stickers and old receipts on the back are part of the work’s history. Photograph them, add the dimensions and note which wall the work hangs on.
